20 Restaurant POS Statistics You Should Know

Your POS (point of sale) system is the single most important piece of technology in your restaurant. Of course, restaurants have been using POS systems for years to handle customer orders and process transactions. But today’s POS system is so much more than just a terminal for taking payments.

“Your POS is really the heart of your tech stack,” explains Back of House tech expert Marylise Trépanier. “Today’s POS system is really an all-in-one restaurant management system. Now, you’re not just completing transactions with your POS. You're collecting data, processing payroll, managing food costs, you name it.”

Thanks to innovations like cloud computing, advanced data analytics, and AI, the modern POS system is an ever more powerful collection of business solutions. To show you just how essential the POS system has become to our industry, we’ve compiled this collection of restaurant POS statistics and restaurant technology statistics for your consideration.

A Few Basic Facts About Restaurant POS Systems

Before we dive into the POS statistics, let’s get an overview of POS systems, what they do, and how they’ve changed in recent years.

What is a POS system and what does it do?

A POS system is a digital platform for managing financial transactions. However, today, many POS systems handle an extensive list of additional functions, including:

  • Processing payments
  • Recording payment data
  • Delivering reports on customer behavior
  • Measuring employee productivity
  • Tracking menu item sales

What kind of hardware is required for a POS system?

Most POS systems either come with or integrate with physical components in your restaurant, including:

  • Monitors and/or tablets
  • Receipt printers
  • Cash drawers
  • Kitchen display systems (KDS)
  • Credit card readers

What are the key features in a modern POS system?

There are several key features that should be included in any POS system, including:

  • Payment processing for credit cards, mobile payments, and cash
  • Robust reporting capabilities on things like daily sales numbers, the performance of select menu items, and sales volume for given periods of time
  • Customer relationship management (CRM) tools to help you capture customer data and personalize your messaging, rewards, and loyalty programs.
  • Digital marketing tools that allow you to create, personalize, and automate digital outreach.
  • Human resources tools that make it possible to automate payroll, evaluate shift performance, and streamline staff scheduling

What are the differences between cloud-based and legacy POS systems?

The primary difference between cloud-based POS systems and traditional POS systems is that cloud-based systems rely on remote servers, while traditional POS systems rely on a single server located within your restaurant.

  • With a cloud-based POS, your access to your data and point-of-sale applications is supported by a remotely located third-party provider.
  • In contrast, an on-premises POS system (also referred to as a traditional or legacy system) operates as a sort of closed circuit within the confines of your restaurant, relying entirely on onsite servers to store data and power sales applications.

Today, most restaurants are using or moving to cloud-based POS systems because they provide better data security, mobile access, and a constantly growing array of advanced features.

20 Restaurant POS Statistics You Should Know in 2026

Now that we know the basics, let’s get to the stats. Restaurant tech is a fast-moving sector and restaurant POS trends are constantly evolving. With that in mind, we did our best to focus on figures from just the last two years. Together, these figures can tell you a lot about what’s happening in the broader restaurant industry and where things are heading.

As Marylise observes, “When you dig a little deeper into the numbers, it’s pretty clear that these powerful POS systems are not a passing trend. To the contrary, it looks like acceptance of this technology will only continue to grow.”

Below are just a few of the numbers Marylise alludes to. These restaurant POS statistics show a growing market with no signs of slowing down.

The POS Marketplace

“There is an enormous marketplace around restaurant POS systems right now and it’s only growing,” Marylise notes. “And one of the most interesting things you’ll notice about this growth is that smaller restaurant businesses are actually a big driver.”

1. The POS market is growing fast. The global restaurant POS software market topped $11.75 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach $21.62 billion by 2032, according to a report from DataM Intelligence.
2. POS systems are driving the larger restaurant tech market. According to a 2025 report from Mordor Intelligence, POS and guest experience technologies held an industry-leading 44.78% share of the restaurant tech market.
3. Chains are the dominant source of revenue in restaurant tech. National brands with more than 100 locations accounted for a 39.92% share of the restaurant tech sector’s revenue in 2025, says the Mordor Intelligence report.
4. However, small restaurant businesses are driving POS growth. According to the same report, while national brands dominate market share, small chains (those with between 2 and 20 locations) are driving the fastest rate of growth for POS vendors with a 15.78% rate of uptake projected through 2031.
5. Cloud-based vendors dominate today’s POS market. According to a report from Restaurant Velocity, market share is dominated by Square (28.10%) and Toast (23.52%), a sharp contrast from a decade ago when legacy providers Aloha and Micros led the POS marketplace.

Adopting POS Technology

“It does seem like more and more traditional restaurants and small businesses are coming around on the technology,” Marylise points out. “I think one of the underestimated but important restaurant POS trends today is the ability to customize the tech and the pricing to different business sizes and needs. This makes a big difference in terms of accessibility and affordability for smaller restaurants.”

6. Most restaurants are using cloud-based POS systems According to payment processing vendor Stripe, 76% of all restaurants are already using a cloud-based POS system, while 23% continue to use on-premises or legacy systems.
7. New users are choosing cloud-based POS systems over legacy systems. The report from Mordor Intelligence notes that cloud-based POS solutions accounted for 60.87% of revenue in 2025, dramatically outpacing on-premise systems with a 14.94% CAGR (compound annual growth rate).
8. Restaurant owners are investing in advanced tech. According to theNational Restaurant Association (NRA), 52% of operators said they plan to invest in back-office technologies, 52% in inventory control and management, and 48% in POS systems.
9. The number of restaurants investing in POS systems is growing fast. According to Nation’s Restaurant News, 53% of operators prioritized POS systems in 2026, up from 40% the year before.
10. POS system costs may vary widely. According to Stripe, the first-year cost for implementing a POS system can run between $3,000 and $15,000.

The Benefits of Having a Restaurant POS System

“It’s true that a comprehensive POS system can be costly depending on your provider, the features you choose, and your payment processing fees,” says Marylise. “But based on the impact that a good POS system will have on your bottom line, it’s usually well worth the investment.”

11. Handheld payments are driving operational efficiency. According to a 2026 report from Toast, handheld devices processed more than 2 billion orders over the prior seven years, ultimately improving table turn times by 15 to 20% over that period.
12. Data from POS systems is driving revenue. According to a recent study from Market Research Future, restaurants that use data-driven strategies and actionable insights from their POS systems see a 15 to 20% increase in revenue.
13. Cloud-based POS systems improve cybersecurity. The report from Market Research Future says that restaurants adopting POS systems saw a 40% reduction in data security incidents.
14. Restaurants are using their POS systems to respond to the growing demand for online ordering. According to Market Growth Reports, 52% of restaurants use their POS to integrate with external and digital ordering channels.
15. Restaurants that use POS systems for mobile payments see a profit boost. Mobile ordering can increase restaurant sales by as much as 25% by improving customer access and convenience, says a report from Market Research Future.

Restaurant POS Trends

“Obviously, like every other industry in the world, AI adoption is certainly one of the biggest restaurant POS trends we’re seeing,” notes Marylise. “But for operators, it’s really about how you’re using these AI-powered tools and whether you’re making the most of them.”

16. Customers like contactless payments. In fact, says a recent report from the National Restaurant Association, 79% of consumers prefer contactless, and 73% prefer to pay using a digital wallet like Apple Pay or Google Wallet.
17. Mobile ordering continues to grow at a rapid pace. The online and mobile ordering sectors grew more than 300% faster than the dine-in sector between 2024 and 2026, says an article from the Nation’s Restaurant News.
18. More restaurants are using AI than meets the eye. A report from Restaurant Velocity notes that the NRA’s 2026 State of the Industry report placed adoption of standalone AI tools at 26%. But, says a January survey from Popmenu, when you account for software platforms that include AI-powered tools, the number of restaurants using AI actually jumps to 69%.
19. AI is helping make POS systems into all-in-one solutions. Market Growth Reports notes that restaurants are increasingly using AI-powered POS tools for tasks that go well beyond payment processing, such as menu & inventory management (34%), guest & marketing activity (32%), and operations & reporting (29%).
20. Restaurants are increasingly willing to use AI tools. A 2025 survey of owners and operators from leading POS provider Toast shows that 86% of respondents are comfortable using AI tools and that 81% plan to use AI-based tools more actively in the future.
